Batter Up
It was somewhat of an busy weekend -- at least enough for a few blog posts, but I'll start with yesterday. I took the Boston Harbor Ferry out to the Harbor Islands, most specifically out to Georges Island, about 25 minutes from the mainland. Brutally hot on shore, it was a hazy and less hot but still muggy day out at Fort Warren. I packed a picnic and explored the fort, which was pretty neat in a Fort Knox kind of way (the Fort Knox in Maine, not in Kentucky).

They held an old-time baseball gave, complete with old fashioned uniforms and different rules and no one using mitts -- that has got to hurt! -- on the parade ground, which was fun to watch (and thus the picture). I was going to make it black and white or sepia tones, but left it like this after all. The umpire (not pictured) was dressed in a tuxedo and top hat.

On the way back in on the ferry, we got hit by a very major thunderstorm.... not so cool because the captain announced it about half way in (as if you couldn't see it blitzing all around). About 100 of the 170 passengers on the ferry were on the upper (non-covered) deck, myself included, and everyone made for the front stairs. Didn't seem so safe, nor was there going to be room for everyone. I leaned under the partial awning of the cockpit, which was mostly undercover. The lighting storm was pretty intense (see here what happened in Dorcester, just a few miles away), but when the rain finally did let down, just a few miles from shore, I was drenched to the bone. Thankfully the camera equipment, laptop and wallet stayed dry in the backpack.

And I got some cabbie's car very wet because there was no way I was going to walk or take the T home. [grin]
